EFFORTLESS AESTHETICS: STYLE AT THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF ROMe
spring 2015
When the courtyard gate opened on the first day of class, my jaw dropped. I had a good feeling that the rest of my Spring 2015 semester studying abroad at the American University of Rome would be spent in total awe of students' fashion choices.
My name is Jane Burnett. I'm a junior majoring in Broadcast Journalism and minoring in Sociology at American University in Washington, D.C.
But this semester, I'm indulging in a radical change of location and lifestyle.
This is my first time covering fashion, but I'm always talking about people's senses of style. I admire the confidence a person seems to display when wearing something that suits him or her.

A little more about me:
I've been drawn to the media industry for as long as I can remember because the field gives journalists access to people's personal histories, which often shape their behavior and choices.
I spent the summers of 2012, 2013 and 2014 working in the world of business news. My four-summer internship (2015 will be my last) at CNBC/NBCUniversal through the Emma Bowen Foundation for Minority Interests in Media in the U.S. taught me that there is a human angle to every story- even in finance.
So when I accepted my Fall 2014 semester internship at News4/NBCWashington (WRC-TV), I was so excited to work in local news. I thought, what better way to learn about other people than by covering human-centered stories?
But back to this fashion blog!
The leather obsession. The European ankle boot trend. Packing lightly for weekend getaways. These are just a few topics I hope to cover this semester.
Other topics include: secure style (style-conscious bags that can withstand basic pickpocketing attempts in public spaces), coolest/craziest purchases from street market stands, transitioning from winter to spring (outfits and cobblestone-proof footwear), accessories, makeup choices and student profiles.
Keep up with my excitement here as I learn to embrace the culture of the Eternal City- one outfit at a time.
